Kamala Devi Harris is an American politician and attorney who served as the 49th Vice President of the United States from 2021 to 2025. Kamala Devi Harris was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California. She is 61 years old. She is American, of mixed Jamaican and Indian (Tamil) heritage. Her father, Donald J. Harris, is a Jamaican-born economist and professor; her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was an Indian-born biomedical scientist who worked in breast cancer research. Her parents divorced when she was young. She has a younger sister, Maya Harris.
She spent part of her childhood in Canada (Montreal area) after her mother moved there for work, attending Westmount High School. She returned to the United States for college, earning a B.A. in political science and economics from Howard University in 1986. She received her J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1989.
Harris began her career as a prosecutor in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, later serving in the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office. She was elected District Attorney of San Francisco in 2003, serving from 2004 to 2011.
In 2010 she was elected Attorney General of California, becoming the first woman, first Black American, and first South Asian American to hold the office. She served from 2011 to 2017, overseeing major settlements related to mortgage foreclosures and for-profit education.
In 2016 she was elected to the U.S. Senate from California, serving from 2017 to 2021. She was the first South Asian American and the second Black woman to serve in the Senate.
In 2020 Joe Biden selected her as his running mate. They won the election, and she was sworn in as Vice President on January 20, 2021. She cast numerous tie-breaking votes in the Senate and focused on issues including voting rights, reproductive rights, and economic opportunity.
In 2024, after President Biden withdrew from the presidential race, Harris became the Democratic nominee. She selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. She lost the general election to Donald Trump. After leaving office in January 2025, she returned to private life in California, published a campaign memoir, and in 2026 indicated she was considering a potential 2028 presidential run.
