Kim debuted in 2005 as the leader of the boy band SS501 under DSP Media with the EP Warning. The group quickly gained popularity in South Korea and expanded activities to Japan and other Asian markets.
He began acting around the same time and rose to widespread fame in 2009 with the role of Yoon Ji-hoo in the hit drama Boys Over Flowers. He followed this with the lead role of Baek Seung-jo in Playful Kiss (2010). Other drama credits include Inspiring Generation and later projects such as When Time Stopped.
