Career
In December 1980, Hoffs formed a band with Vicki and Debbi Peterson (initially called the Bangs, later The Bangles due to a legal issue). The group emerged from Los Angeles’ Paisley Underground scene and signed with Columbia Records. They achieved major success in the 1980s with multi-platinum albums Different Light (1986) and Everything (1988) and hits such as “Manic Monday” (written by Prince), “Walk Like an Egyptian,” “In Your Room,” “Hazy Shade of Winter,” and “Eternal Flame” (which Hoffs co-wrote and sang lead on).
After the Bangles’ initial breakup, Hoffs launched a solo career with When You’re a Boy (1991) and a self-titled album (1996). She has continued releasing solo work, including covers projects and original material. In 2026 she released The List, her first album of new original songs in 14 years, featuring collaborators such as Rufus Wainwright, Edie Brickell, and Dan Wilson.
She has also appeared in films (including contributions related to the Austin Powers series via the fictional band Ming Tea) and published her debut novel This Bird Has Flown in 2023. The Bangles have reunited periodically for tours and recordings over the years.
