Career
Poundstone started performing stand-up in Boston in 1979 and traveled the country by bus, honing her craft in comedy clubs. She settled for a time in San Francisco, where her improvisational style gained attention, before moving to Los Angeles with encouragement from peers including Robin Williams.
She gained national exposure through television appearances and HBO specials. Her 1990 special Cats, Cops and Stuff earned her a CableACE Award for Best Stand-Up Comedy Special—the first time a woman won in that category. She later released Paula Poundstone Goes to Harvard (1996). In 1989 she won an American Comedy Award for Best Female Stand-Up Comic.
In 1992 she provided political commentary for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno during the presidential campaign and became the first female comedian to host the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. She has been a regular panelist on NPR’s Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! for many years and has appeared on numerous talk and variety shows.
Additional work includes voice acting (notably Forgetter Paula in Pixar’s Inside Out and its sequel), writing, and her podcast Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone. She continues to tour as a stand-up comedian.
