Jessica Parker Kennedy was born on October 3, 1984, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the child of an Afro-Canadian father and a Jewish mother. Growing up, Kennedy says there were very few people of color around, and she was friends with the sole Black girl at her school. She gravitated toward friendships with other Black people later as a means of finding community.
Her mother, Toni Kennedy, was a teacher. She was an only child raised by her mother as a single mom. In elementary school, she was really good at gymnastics, but her mother, afraid that she might get injured, did not let her continue.
Her first string of screen work began with the television film Santa Baby (2006), where she played Lucy the Elf — a role she reprised in the sequel Santa Baby 2: Christmas Maybe (2009).
This was soon followed by a film debut in the comedy musical film Another Cinderella Story, where she played Tami, the best friend of the lead character Mary, played by Selena Gomez.
In 2008, she joined the cast of Smallville for three episodes, portraying DC Comics heroine Bette Sans Souci — also known as Plastique — a teenager with the ability to project high-energy forces from her body.
