Career
Zoe Smith made her senior international debut at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi at the age of 16. She won bronze in the women’s 58 kg category, becoming the first English woman to medal in Commonwealth weightlifting.
She competed at the 2012 London Olympics in the 58 kg division, finishing 12th (or 10th in some listings) and setting a British clean-and-jerk record at the time. A shoulder injury caused her to miss the 2016 Rio Olympics. She returned to finish eighth in the 59 kg category at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (held in 2021).
At Commonwealth level she won gold in the 58 kg at Glasgow 2014 and silver in the 63 kg at Gold Coast 2018. She has multiple European Championship medals, including bronze in 2014 and 2019, and in 2023 she won gold in the clean and jerk plus bronze in the total in the 64 kg category at the European Championships in Yerevan. She did not qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Throughout her career she has balanced elite training with part-time work (including as a barista) and has been involved in coaching at East London weightlifting facilities.
