Career
Clark originally traveled to Los Angeles hoping to compete against the Gladiators as a Contender. Producers were so impressed by her tryout that they offered her a spot as a Gladiator instead, giving her the name Storm because she “blew them all away.”
She joined the syndicated series American Gladiators in 1991 as a replacement for the injured Gladiator Gold (Tonya Knight). She quickly became a fan favorite, particularly in events such as Powerball and Joust. Her signature on-screen warning was: “Contenders, when it rains, it pours. So watch out. The Storm is coming!”
She remained a regular on the show until 1993. She also performed the national anthem during the American Gladiators live tour. Her time on the series ended after she suffered a serious ACL injury during a Powerball event.
After leaving the show, Clark largely stepped away from the entertainment spotlight. She later appeared in the 2023 Netflix documentary series Muscles & Mayhem: An Unauthorized Story of American Gladiators, where she openly discussed her experiences on the show and the challenges she faced afterward.
Personal Life
Debbie Clark was a mother to a son named Crayton (also referred to as Clayton in some reports). In the years after American Gladiators, she faced significant personal hardships, including surviving domestic violence. She and her son experienced a period of homelessness in San Diego lasting more than two years. With help from supporters and former Gladiators, she was eventually able to regain housing stability.
