Balthazar Getty began acting as a teenager. He was discovered by a casting director and landed the lead role of Ralph in the 1990 film adaptation of Lord of the Flies. That same year he appeared in Young Guns II.

Throughout the 1990s he took roles in films including Natural Born Killers (1994), Judge Dredd (1995), and David Lynch’s Lost Highway (1997). In the 2000s he moved more into television, with recurring roles as Richard Montana on Charmed (2003–2004), Thomas Grace on Alias (2005–2006), and a main role as Tommy Walker on the ABC drama Brothers & Sisters (2006–2011).
