Hasselhoff began his professional acting career in the 1970s with the role of Dr. Snapper Foster on the soap opera The Young and the Restless (1975–1982). His breakthrough came in 1982 when he starred as Michael Knight in the hit series Knight Rider (1982–1986), opposite the talking car KITT. The show made him an international star.
In 1989 he took on the role of Mitch Buchannon in Baywatch. After the series was initially canceled, he invested his own money, became an executive producer, and helped relaunch it in syndication. Baywatch became a global phenomenon and one of the most-watched television shows in history. He remained with the series for much of its run and also appeared in related projects.
