Christian Ernest Dior was born on January 21, 1905, in Granville, Normandy, France. He was the second of five children born to Maurice Dior, a wealthy fertilizer manufacturer, and Madeleine Martin. The family lived in a clifftop villa called Les Rhumbs.
Dior began his professional design career in the late 1930s. He worked as an assistant for designer Robert Piguet starting in 1938. During World War II he joined the house of Lucien Lelong, where he designed alongside Pierre Balmain while continuing to create under occupation conditions.
In December 1946, with financial backing from textile magnate Marcel Boussac, he founded the House of Christian Dior at 30 Avenue Montaigne in Paris. On February 12, 1947, he presented his first collection, later nicknamed the “New Look” by Harper’s Bazaar editor Carmel Snow. The silhouette featured rounded shoulders, a cinched waist, full bust, and voluminous skirts — a dramatic departure from wartime austerity.
The New Look became an international sensation, restoring Paris as the center of fashion and helping revitalize the French economy through couture exports. Dior expanded rapidly with licensing deals for accessories, stockings, furs, and perfume (including the iconic Miss Dior, inspired by his sister Catherine).
