Career
Duncan began performing and teaching as a child in California. Early appearances in Chicago and New York met limited success. At around age 21 she left the United States for Europe, traveling with meager savings.
In London she studied Greek sculpture at the British Museum, which confirmed and refined her instinctive approach to movement. She gained recognition in Europe for dancing barefoot in simple, flowing costumes inspired by classical antiquity, often to the music of Brahms, Wagner, Beethoven, and other composers. Her style emphasized natural rhythms, improvisation, and emotional expression rather than strict technique.
She performed widely in Europe, founded dance schools (including in Germany, France, and later the Soviet Union), and became a celebrated, if controversial, figure. Her work helped lay foundations for modern dance by prioritizing individual expression and the body’s natural lines. She toured extensively, including returns to the United States, and influenced ballet reformers as well as emerging modern dancers.
Personal Life
Duncan’s parents were Joseph Charles Duncan and Mary Isadora (Dora) Gray. She had three siblings: Augustin, Elizabeth, and Raymond Duncan. The family faced financial hardship after the parents’ divorce.
She had two children outside of marriage: daughter Deirdre (fathered by stage designer Edward Gordon Craig) and son Patrick (fathered by Paris Singer, heir to the Singer sewing-machine fortune). In 1913 both children and their nurse drowned when the car they were riding in rolled into the Seine River in Paris—a tragedy from which Duncan never fully recovered. She later had another child who lived only a short time.
In 1922 she married Russian poet Sergei Yesenin (also spelled Esenin or Yesenin), who was significantly younger. The marriage was turbulent; they separated, and Yesenin died by suicide in 1925. Duncan had other relationships and was known for her rejection of conventional social and marital norms.
