In 1994 he escaped by boat with a group of friends (and family members according to some accounts), surviving gunfire from Cuban border guards and later receiving political asylum in the United States. In 1995 he survived the wreck of the shrimp boat Sundown Two while participating in a democracy flotilla protesting the Castro regime.

In 1997 he co-founded the Cuban Writers in Exile Centre (a PEN International chapter) with writers including Ángel Cuadra, Indaniro Restano, Octavio Costa, and Reinaldo Bragado Bretaña, serving as vice president. He contributed to Radio y Televisión Martí, directing arts and culture coverage, and took part in a 2007 Polish-government-hosted delegation that signed an “Agreement for Democracy in Cuba.”

His major published works include the short-story collections Mala jugada (1996) and Carga de la Caballería (2006), the novels La tabla (2008) and Caballeros en el Tiempo (2013), and essays such as Mitos del antiexilio (2007, translated into English and Italian) and Los naipes en el espejo (2011). Later titles included Escapados del paraíso, El Guardián en la Batalla (winner of a Reinaldo Arenas narrative prize), Capitán Caín, and Avellaneda al atardecer. His stories appeared in international anthologies and were translated into several languages. He remained active as a writer and cultural figure until shortly before his death.
